Our Story

Learning About Physio The Hard Way At Munster Rugby

In 2012 while working with Munster Rugby in Ireland, Dave O’Sullivan (our founder) had to retire two international rugby players. Despite his best efforts he wasn’t able to help them get back on the field. Dave made the decision there and then to ensure this wouldn’t happen again on his watch. Dave’s search started for an alternative to help people who failed traditional approaches.

Dave invested thousands of hours and pounds searching for answers. He discovered that to get lasting relief, performing hands on treatment or just strengthening a muscle in isolation is not enough. Dave finally discovered where he went wrong and that the body has to work as a whole.

Looking At The Body As A Whole

We must look at the person first and the pain second. Over time Dave discovered the answer to the problem always lies in the person’s story. Dave discovered having the right answer is smart but asking the right question is genius. Dave found the quality of patient’s results is dictated by the quality of the questions one asks.

Once Dave was able to find the true cause of the problem, helping patients become pain free became easier. Yet there was still more learning to be had for Dave.

Dave found that getting rid of a person’s pain was getting easier yet keeping the pain away was the true art. To do this, Dave had to develop a ‘Goldilocks’ style step by step approach. That is to prescribe the right exercise at the right time for the patient’s nervous system. Not too much load nor not too little to help them keep the changes once and for all.

Testing TheProSport Approach With Huddersfield Giantse

Dave continued to test and refine the ‘Pro Sport’ step by step approach with the Huddersfield Giants. Dave had to get long lasting results fast yet do it safely without his athletes breaking down again. In 2013, the Giants won the league leaders shield, their first silverware in 51 years. They had the best injury record in Super League from 2013 to 2015 under Dave’s care.

Moving From Up And Running To The University To Salendine Nook

Dave was also implementing the ‘Pro Sport’ Approach with non sporting patients above ‘Up and Running; in the town centre. The results were just as impressive and from there, word of mouth grew. Pro Sport Physiotherapy then moved to the University of Huddersfield Sports Centre. Current Head Physio, Shane Mooney joined the team in 2014 and in late 2016, the clinic moved to Salendine Nook Shopping centre.

The clinic has gone from strength to strength over the years and every therapist at Pro Sport completes intense ongoing training. Our therapists are highly regarded and many have been headhunted to go on and work with pro sport organisations.

Getting Headhunted By England Rugby League

England Rugby League ‘head hunted’ Dave to lead the England Rugby League Physio team for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup in Australia. England narrowly lost to Australia 6-0 in the final at Suncorp Stadium, in Brisbane.

England Rugby Union Requests The Pro Sport Approach

England Rugby Union also sought the ‘Pro Sport Approach’ for the 2019 World Cup when they also ‘head hunted’ Dave to lead the rehabilitation of some key players. Dave travelled to Japan with the team for the tournament which also lost the final to South Africa in Tokyo.

Two World Cup Finals

Dave is one of the few to have experienced the unique high pressure demands of working in two World Cup final weeks in both codes of rugby.

Numerous other clubs and athletes such as Masters Golf Champion Danny Willet have trusted the ‘Pro Sport’ approach.

While helping world class athletes is nice, truth be told, our true passion lies in helping the ‘everyday’ person. The person who has failed traditional approaches.
